Reducing Your Household Chemicals

Reducing the number of chemicals you use in your home has many benefits. It helps keep dangerous chemicals out of the environment, it’s cheaper than buying branded products, and it contributes to a healthier living space. Just try going a week without using any commercial scented products or cleaning solutions. The great feeling you get is not just because you are doing the right thing.

If you really don’t have the time to make your own cleaning solutions, you can purchase environmentally friendly cleaning products at most stores. You still need to be careful, however, as there is no requirement for products to be labeled environmentally friendly. Reading labels will be imperative. Avoid anything with scents that don’t come from essential oils, as well as anything with sulfates. You will probably need to do some experimenting to find products which truly work well.

Instead of trying to find good products at your local grocery or big-box store you could look around online for small businesses that specialize in healthy cleaning products. This will probably be a must if you want to go 100 percent chemical free. To try and make everything from laundry detergent to shampoo yourself is possible, but is quite a job. By working with a local business you can feel great because not only are you getting a fantastic product, but you are supporting local jobs.

Some of the basic cleaners are pretty easy to make yourself. Things like using vinegar to clean your mirrors are age old recipes that can be revived. A quick search online for natural cleaning recipes will net you pages and pages of great, simple recipes you can use to clean your home. Once you learn to make these products you will be shocked at how inexpensive and effective these recipes are. You should definitely start to wonder about the quality of main stream products when you see that the ingredients for your home-made cleaners are often marketed as “cleaning boosters.” If the mainstream product is worth all that extra money there should be no reason to boost its effectiveness.

Change the way you think about scents. Large corporations have conditioned us to believe that a space is not clean unless it is heavy with fragrance. When you really look at how much it costs to fill your entire home with scented items it is easy to see why companies would introduce this concept. If you do choose to scent your home stick with essential oils instead of commercial products. Where commercially produced scents can cause respiratory problems and have been linked to depression, you can use essential oils to activate pre-programed areas of your brain to invoke various emotions.

By removing chemicals from your home you can not only feel better, you can make the earth better. Society has become addicted to fragrance and using a specialized product for every corner of your home. By replacing them with simple, general use products you can crate a fantastic home for yourself and your loved ones.
